Action Limits or acceptable limits are often used as failure limits of a specific analyte. It is the allowable amount of a specific substance that is "allowed" in each set of circumstances. Action limits vary between geographical regions and between regulatory agencies.
A LOQ or Limit of Quantitation goes one step further beyond a simple LOD. Instead of this being a simple "yes / no" qualitative assay, there is actual enumeration of the analyte. The LOQ is the lowest amount of a specific analyte that can be quantified or measured. Measurements can vary from parts per million (PPM) or parts per billion (PPB) as is used in solvent, heavy metal, and pesticide assays. Other quantitative measurements can include weights as in milligrams per gram for cannabinoid potencies, or microbial activity which can be measured in CFU / mL or Colony Forming Units per milliliter of fluid. Now we are in a better situation because we not only know the substance is there, but we can "count" it also.
A LOD or Limit of Detection is typically a qualitative "yes / no" or "presence / absence" of a specific analyte. It is the most minimal amount of a substance that can be detected by a particular assay method and a particular analytical device. To put it simply, the substance is there but we do not know how much of it is present.
We test cannabis flowers, concentrates, infused products (such as edibles and tinctures), e-liquids, vape oils, topicals, patches, capsules and any product that contains active cannabinoids.
It is the method for ensuring a product is homogeneous at the start of sampling, continuing through the testing process. This is important in ensuring that the process used to manufacture edible products and other cannabis goods produces uniformity and consistency.
